| Tactile Technologies of Rehovot has obtained US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) marketing approval for its dental implant location software, a three-dimensional surgery planning software solution.
The company says it is now preparing to begin marketing of the system in the US.
Tactile Technologies is developing an Implant Location System (ILS) that uses a disposable micro-robot for carrying out dental implant procedures. It has announced the successful completion of a series of animal trials for the ILS, and it is now preparing clinical trials to be conducted on humans slated for July 2005.
Tactile Technologies says its bone-sensing technology enables precision three-dimensional measurement of bone tissue covered by soft tissue, without the need for invasive surgical procedures.
The company has signed cooperation agreements with a number of leading medical research centers, including Vienna General Hospital, Boston University Hospital, and New York University. It plans to expand ILS and related tactile sensing technology to spinal and orthopedic applications. Tactile was founded in 2003 by a group of physicists that included Dr. Zvika Slovin, who serves as CEO of the company, Uriel Weinstein, vice president R&D, and Prof. Haim Tal. Amichai Ben-David is chairman. Ben-David founded and managed the investment company DCL Technologies, which supported the founding of many successful ventures, including RDC Communications, Innoveda and Millimetrix Broadband Networks
Tactile Technologies president Dr. Gerald Niznick DMD MSD previously founded the dental implant company Paragon Implant, which was sold to Sulzer Medica in 2002 for $102 million. Dr. Niznick invested $4 million in Tactile Technologies in 2004.
Tactile Technologies’ research and development center is in the Rabin Science Park in Rehovot. The company has 14 employees.
